Myrick Sweeps 100- and 200-meters at BIG EAST Championships

Piscataway, NJ – Miami junior Wyllesheia Myrick (Miami Northwestern) won the 100-meter (11.30) and 200-meter (23.23) titles to lead the University of Miami to a second-place finish (103 points) at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Piscataway, NJ. Villanova won the team championship (118 points).
Myrick, the first Hurricane to win both the BIG EAST 100- and 200-meter titles in the same season, set a new BIG EAST record in the 200-meters while breaking the UM record in the event for the second consecutive day.
Following the meet, Myrick was honored as the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Track Performer. She is the third Hurricane to win the award joining Gillian Russell (1992) and Yolanda McCray (1997 and 1999).
“I knew that if I came out and worked hard I had a chance to do well this weekend,” said Myrick. “I admire Gillian (Russell) and Yolanda (McCray) so to be in their company is a tremendous honor.”
Myrick, who provisionally qualified in 100- and 200-meters for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 31-June 3) in Durham, NC, also achored the women’s 4×400-meter relay to a second-place finish (3:37.93).
Miami’s time in the relay was also a NCAA provisional qualifier.
“Wyllesheia (Myrick) was outstanding today,” said head coach Amy Deem. “She came in very focused on qualifying for the NCAA Championships in both the 100-meters and 200-meters and I think she had put herself in very good position.”
In the 800-meters Miami took second and third with All-America Natalie Watson (Coral Springs) finishing with a time of 2:05.98 followed by freshman Patricia Pearson (Jacksonville, FL) with a time of 2:06.63. Both marks are NCAA provisional qualifiers.
Miami also scored well in the long jump competition with three jumpers placing in the top five. Junior Antonnikka Owens (Orlando, FL) finished third with a leap of 6.06 meters (19-10.75) to lead the Hurricanes. Sophomore Kareen Clarke (Lithonic, GA) took fourth with a leap of 6.01 meters (19-08.34) while freshman Suzette Rose (Algonquin, IL) finished fifth (5.87m/19-03.25).
