Crew Completes Season At Lexus Cup

Oak Ridge, TN – The University of Miami women’s crew wound up its 2000 sprint season at the Lexus Central Sprints on Melton Lake. The varsity eight rowed to a third-place finish in the Petite Final, while UM’s second varsity eight finished sixth in the Grande Final.

Sixteen teams, including Miami, from around the Central Region converged on the 2,000-meter course looking for the automatic entry into the NCAA Championship for the winner. The schools rowing along with the Hurricanes were Central Florida, Clemson, Creighton, Duke, Iowa, Jacksonville, Kansas State, Michigan, Michigan State, Murray State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Tennessee and Texas.

UM’s varsity eight consisted of coxswain Meg Venezia and rowers Michele McVeagh, Cathy Dunnet, Monika Manios, Amanda Turner, Julie Bender, Liz Payer, Britta Chambers and Megan McGrath.

The second varsity eight consisted of coxswain Jenny Lee and rowers Kristi Killingsworth, Lindsey Tarabula, Marijka VanderPol, Kate Weeden, Lavonne Tarafa, Angie Hargot, Bernadette Lack and Yianna Reizakis.

After not qualifying for the Grande Final, the varsity eight rowed strong in the Petite run, placing third behind Kansas (6:43.1) and Clemson (6:50.4) with a time of 6:52.0. Miami placed ahead of Tulsa (6:52.6), Kansas State (6:55.7) and Notre Dame (6:57.5).

In the second varsity eight Grande Final the Hurricanes finished in sixth with a time of 7:03.7. Michigan won the race with a time of 6:42.9. Ohio State (6:47.6), Michigan State (6:48.5), Clemson (6:49.4) and Iowa (6:58.4) rounded out the placing.

Overall in the point standings, UM came in 13th with Michigan grabbing first.
