Jones, Martin Qualify For Finals

Piscataway, NJ (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami senior Daryl Jones (Dallas, TX) qualified for the 100-meter final, junior Gus Martin (Miami Northwestern) advanced to the finals of both the 200-meters and 110-meter hurdles, and sophomore Dan Boniface (Seattle, WA) broke the school-record in the 3000-meter steeplechase to highlight the second day of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Tack and Field Championships in Piscataway, NJ.

The Hurricanes are currently in ninth-place with 10 points. West Virginia leads the team competition with 50 points.

Jones, the two-time defending BIG EAST Champion in the 100-meters, won his heat with a time of 10.72 to advance to Sunday’s final. Jones is attempting to become just the second runner in BIG EAST history to win three consecutive 100-meter titles.

Overall Miami had three runners advance to the 100-meter final including seniors Shane Brown (St. Andrews, Jamaica) and Joseph Mbayen (Paris, France).

Martin, ranked No. 1 in the BIG EAST in the 110-meter hurdles, was also impressive on Saturday advancing to the finals of the 110-meter hurdles and 200-meters. Martin finished first in both of his semifinal heats of the 200-meters (21.39) and 110-meter hurdles (14.15).

In the 3000-meter steeplechase, Boniface finished fourth with a UM record time of 9:07.03. Boniface has now bettered the school-record three times this season and has shaved over five seconds off the old school-record (9:12.19) since the beginning of the season.

In other finals, senior Guy Emry (Monument, CO) finished fifth in the decathlonwith a score of 6337 points and Mbayen finished 10th in the long jump with a leap of 6.87 meters (22-06.50).
