Huguet Named Freshman All-American

Omaha, Neb. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – University of Miami freshman closer George Huguet was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, as announced by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Huguet, who is ranked third nationally with 13 saves, has compiled a 1-0 record and a 2.27 ERA in his first season with the Hurricanes. The Barbara Goleman High graduate was also named the team’s Rookie of the Year.

He assumed the closer’s role midway into February and compiled the most saves at UM since Robbie Morrison totaled 14 in 1996. The last UM closer to compile at least 13 saves was All-American Michael Neu (16) in 1999.

His 13 saves already stands at No. 7 on the all-time career list at Miami. Huguet’s 41 total appearances in 2001 also is a team high.

Among Huguet’s top performances were recording saves in four of UM’s five victories over in-state rival Florida State, including all three games in Tallahassee. His last save came against Clemson in UM’s 10-8 victory in the Super Regional opener.

Huguet joins current teammates Mike Rodriguez (1999), Kevin Howard (2000) and Danny Matienzo (2000), who each earned All-America status in their first seasons in Coral Gables, respectively. Additionally, Howard was National Freshman of the Year.
