Jim Burt Named To Academic All-America Team

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Sophomore Jim Burt, a first baseman and right fielder with the University of Miami baseball team, was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America District III Team, selected by CoSIDA.

Burt, a Co-Captain for the 2002 squad, holds a 3.812 grade point average in Finance. Among his academic achievements at Miami are spots on the President, Provost and Athletic Director honor rolls, as well as Dean’s List.

On the field, the Allendale, N.J. resident, is one of the team’s top hitters and is among the top few in every offensive category. Burt currently places third on the team with a .318 batting average while leading the team with a .438 on-base percentage and his 29 walks. He is also listed among the team leaders with 16 doubles, six home runs, 34 runs batted in, 83 total bases, 31 runs scored and a .539 slugging percentage.

Burt’s 2002 season highlights include the game winning hits in Hurricane victories over UCLA, South Florida and Cal State Fullerton.

Last season Burt assisted Miami to the 2001 College World Series Championship as the Hurricanes swept through the series with wins over Tennessee, Southern California and Stanford. The team’s top defensive reserve in 2001, Burt made crucial outs for UM during the ninth innings of each of the four games played at the CWS.

Off the field, Burt has been involved with the Athletic Department’s Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner deliveries and Red Ribbon Say No To Drugs Week.

Burt, the son of former UM football Hall of Famer and two-time Super Bowl Champion Jim Burt, came to Coral Gables in 2000 after a standout prep career at Bergen Catholic High School. The younger Burt redshirted his first season with the Hurricanes in 2000 before seeing action in 2001. A former member of the National Honor Society in high school, Burt also graduated in the top five percent of his class.
