Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Sean Savage: Cincinnati, Ohio: Good Luck Gentlemen,I have been a Miami Hurricane fan ever since I attended my first game in the Orange Bowl back in ’87. At the time I was living in Miami. I have been wearing my orange and green colors proudly here in the state of Ohio and I am looking forward to another National Championship victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes. I am also looking forward on watching Ken Dorsey and Willis McGahee proving themselves (as they have all year)to the Heisman Committee on the mistake they made on Saturday night.Best of Luck Hurricanes”Go Canes”Your Fan in Ohio
Lisa Varona: Mexico Beach, FL: I want to CONGRATULATE the team on a HUGE job well done but I want to pass on this email that a good friend sent to me on the Heisman Trophy Winner and who it should have been & why….Dear Readers,
I have read several articles about Carson Palmer winning the Heisman trophy. I applaud his accomplishment and wish him the best in the Orange Bowl game. However, I believe a more deserving candidate was left unrecognized. From the tone of many comments I’ve read in reference to Ken Dorsey and the University of Miami, it seems that their accomplishments are not held in the highest regard. In light of this sentiment, I would like to express a few thoughts which should be considered.
I believe that Dorsey was more deserving than the rest of the Heisman candidates, including Willis McGahee, for the following reasons:
1. He has already lead his team to one national championship.
2. He has led his team to another national championship game, with his outstanding play this year.
3. He has the best W-L record among all the candidates.
4. His performance, while being “inferior” in a statistical sense, to the performances of the other QB’s in the running, yet certainly outstanding and deserving of a Heisman, came in an undefeated season.
5. He has had the best college football career out of all of the other candidates.
6. His team played a schedule including top teams from several conferences.
7. His team played 5 teams which were ranked in the top 25 in the AP poll, just like Carson Palmer of USC
8. Unlike Carson Palmer of USC, Ken Dorsey led his team to victories over ALL their ranked opponents, AND one of the top two teams in three separate conferences.
9. Ken Dorsey led his team to an undefeated record within his team’s conference, and a conference championship, even though their conference included 3 teams, other than themselves, ranked in AP’s top 25.
10. In contrast, Carson Palmer did not lead his team to a conference championship, in fact, losing to the only AP top 25 ranked opponent in their conference, other than themselves
11. All teams play cupcakes, some cupcakes are worse than others, and some teams’ legitimate conference matchups would be another team’s cupcake matchups.
In closing, there is no legitimate reason why Ken Dorsey is not at least equally deserving of the Heisman Trophy as Carson Palmer, except for maybe the raw numbers. In the past (Eric Crouch), players have won primarily due to their achievements throughout their college career, despite the fact that they did not have a season, which would best qualify them, over all the other candidates, for the Heisman trophy that year. Ken Dorsey has certainly done that, while playing for two consecutive National Championships, and hopefully winning both of them. The raw numbers for this season, being the only variable in favor of USC’s Carson Palmer, leave me wondering why the Heisman voters have ignored all the other variables in Ken Dorsey’s favor. I thought the Heisman was the Heisman, not the BCS.
Thank you for taking the time to read a few of my thoughts.
Happy Holidays
