Greggs Advances At NCAA Championships

Sacramento, CA (hurricanesports.com) – Freshman Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) won her preliminary heat of the 400-meters in a time of 51.85 seconds to highlight Thursday’s morning session at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, CA. With the victory, Greggs advances to the 400-meter semifinals scheduled for Friday.

Greggs, seeded fourth heading into the NCAA Championships, posted the second fastest time of the opening round and has yet to lose a race this outdoor season versus collegiate competition (10-0).

Also competing in the 400-meters was senior Sashanie Simpson (Miami, FL) who finished fifth in her first-round heat in a time of 53.57 to miss advancing to the semifinals. Later tonight, Greggs and Simpson will compete in the 4×400-meter relay (7:00 p.m. PT) as the Hurricanes’ fourth-ranked relay team tries to advance to Saturday’s final.

On Wednesday, Greggs ran the second-leg of the 4×100-meter relay that advanced to Friday’s final.

In the 800-meters senior Patricia Pearson (Jacksonville, FL) finished eighth in her semifinal heat in a time of 2:06.47 and did not advance to Saturday’s final. Also competing Thursday morning was senior Sharianne Lawson (Palm Beach Lakes) who finished seventh in her semifinal heat of the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.45 seconds. Lawson, who finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, did not advance to Saturday’s final.

Hurricanes scheduled to compete during the evening session include senior Jamillah Wade (Philadelphia, PA) in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles (6:00 p.m. PT), junior Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) in the first round of the triple jump (7:15 p.m. PT), and juniors Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) and Jennifer Penrose (Mesa, AZ) in the qualifying round of the shot put (8:30 p.m. PT).
