Hurricanes Swimming and Diving Host Rutgers

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami Swimming and Diving team will host Rutgers at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool in Coral Gables on Friday, Jan. 2 beginning at 4 p.m.

This will be UM’s second duel meet of the 2003-04 season. Earlier this season Miami fell to in-state foe Florida Atlantic on Oct. 25 despite taking first place finishes in nine of 16 events.

The Miami swim team will return to the lanes for the first time since competing in the Minnesota Invitational on Nov. 21-23.

Junior Katalin Ferenczi will look to pace the Hurricanes against the Scarlet Knights after matching the school record, which she also holds, in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.26 in the preliminaries at the Minnesota Invitational.

UM will also look for a big outing by freshman Tara Erwin who took a first place finish at the Minnesota Invitational in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:45.58.

The Hurricane diving team enters the competition after last taking part in the Camo Invitational in Montreal, Canada on Dec. 4-7.

Two-time All American Miguel Velazquez will hit the pool for the first time after finishing eleventh in the finals of the men’s platform with a score of 372.03 while freshman Heather Bounds looks to improve on a 188.91 in the preliminaries of the women’s platform at the Camo Invite.
