Miami Welcomes Itself To The ACC With 6-1 Win Against N.C. State

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Miami Hurricanes (12-3, 1-0) ushered in a new era in their baseball history with a 6-1 victory against North Carolina State (10-3, 0-1) to open their inaugural season in the ACC Friday night in front of 2,542 at Mark Light Field.
The `Canes rode a career night from undefeated ace pitcher Cesar Carrillo and took advantage of four Wolfpack errors. Carrillo went a season-long 7.1 innings, gave up three hits, one run and struck out a career-high 10 batters to run his season record to 3-0. He upped his career record to 15-0 and Miami moved to 24-0 all-time in games Carrillo has pitched in.
UM junior Ryan Braun doubled twice and left fielder Jon Jay went 2-4 with one RBI.
Danny Figueroa led off the Miami first with a single to right field. Figueroa stole second and advanced to third on an infield single by Jay. The throw from Wolfpack shortstop Jonathan Diaz on Jay’s hit got by first baseman Aaron Bates and Figueroa was able to score from third for a 1-0 UM lead.
Another Wolfpack error allowed the Hurricanes to increase their lead to 3-0 in the second inning. Danny Figueroa hit a two-out drive to deep center that was dropped by N.C. State’s Brian Aragon. Freshman Alex Garabedian and sophomore Roger Tomas scored on the play but the relay throw from Matt Devine to Matt Camp beat Figueroa on his way to third base to end the inning.
Jay drew a one-out walk in the third and advanced to third base on a double down the left field line by Braun. Danny Valencia reached first base on a fielding error by Bates, allowing Jay to score for a 4-0 UM lead.
The Wolfpack got on the board in the fifth with a two-out triple to center field by Camp that scored Jonathan Diaz from first to come within 4-1.
Tomas led off a two-run sixth for the `Canes with a single. Walter Diaz walked and Tomas advanced to third on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly by Paco Figueroa scored Tomas and a single by Jay brought in Walter Diaz for a 6-1 lead.
Carrillo walked one batter and hit another before being relieved by freshman Carlos Gutierrez in the top of the eighth inning. Gutierrez walked Ryan Pond to load the bases. Junior Andrew Lane bailed the `Canes out, retiring two batters on only three pitches to end the Wolfpack scoring threat. Jon McLean closed out the game in the ninth with two strikeouts.
Wolfpack starter Phil Davidson was charged with the loss and gave up three hits, four runs, two earned runs and struck out three in four innings before he was replaced in the fifth by Alan Letchworth.
The teams meet again, Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field. UM senior Dan Touchet is scheduled to start against N.C. State’s Jeff Stallings.
Notes: Danny Figueroa became the first Hurricane to get a hit and score a run in ACC play… Jay extended his hitting streak to 12 games and he has hit safely in 29 of the last 30 games dating back to May 19, 2004… It was Jay’s 11th multi-hit game of the season… Carrillo’s 10 strikeouts tied for the most against the Wolfpack this season.
