No. 9 Hurricanes Set For No. 13 Clemson and No. 8 Georgia Tech

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The ninth ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team will close the 2005 regular season on the road with pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference matches at No. 13 Clemson, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and at No. 8 Georgia Tech, Sunday at noon.
The match against Clemson will feature the top two players in the country going head-to-head. UM’s No. 1 ranked Megan Bradley, will contend with Clemson’s No. 2 ranked Julie Coin. Both players are undefeated in the dual season, with Bradley holding an 18-0 record and Coin boasting a 19-0 mark.
Both players share a common loss to then No. 1 Audra Cohen of Northwestern at the Rivera/ITA All-American Championships. After the loss, Bradley has gone on to win 32-straight matches en route to a 37-1 overall record. Bradley has matched her own single season record of 37-6, which she set last season, and is only one win away from setting the single season school record.
The Hurricanes are riding an ACC-best 15-match win streak and stand atop the ACC standings with an 8-0 unbeaten mark in league play. Miami improved to 17-2 with wins at No. 10 Duke and No. 31 Wake Forest last weekend.
Bradley and sophomore Audrey Banada were ranked fifth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) doubles rankings that were released April 5th. The tandem has posted a 15-1 mark in dual season play.
Besides Bradley, the Hurricanes have three ranked players in sophomore Emily Mowery, freshman Patricia Starzyk and junior Melissa Applebaum. Mowery is ranked 84th with a 10-3 spring record. Starzyk is No. 107th and possesses an unbeaten mark of 19-0 since joining the Hurricanes in January. Applebaum made her debut in the most recent ITA singles poll at 124th and holds a 13-3 record in dual action.
A Look at the Tigers…
The Hurricanes head into Clemson where they hold a 5-1 advantage in matches played at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. This will be the first meeting between the teams as member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, with the Hurricanes winning their last meeting, 4-3, in 2001. The Tigers (14-6 overall) are on a nine match win streak with all their wins coming against ranked opponents and are currently third in the ACC standings with a 5-1 mark.
The Tigers are led by No. 2 ranked Julie Coin, who holds an unbeaten record of 19-0 in dual-match play. Coin and Romy Farah are ranked No. 22 in doubles, while Farah is Clemson’s only other ranked singles player at No. 80.
Clemson, the defending ACC regular season and tournament champions, finished last season with a 26-4 record that included a trip to the NCAA Final Four.
A Look at the Yellow Jackets…
Miami will face a tough Georgia Tech squad that has shot up from No. 34 in the ITA preseason poll to as high as sixth in the country. The Yellow Jackets, who were ranked eighth in the most recent ITA poll, holds a 13-2 overall record and sits in second in the ACC with a 6-0 mark. Boasting an eight-match win streak, Georgia Tech has only lost to No. 6 Vanderbilt and No. 18 Harvard and, alongside Miami, has lost fewest matches out of all the teams in the conference.
The Yellow Jackets are led by No. 14 Kristie Miller, who has been named ACC Performer of the Week three times this season. Miller and teammate Alison Silverio join to become the 15th ranked doubles team in the nation, while Dasha Potapova, ranked 115th, is the only other ranked singles player in the Yellow Jacket’s roster.
Miami leads the all-time series 2-1, with Georgia Tech taking the last meeting in 2001, 4-3.
