Darden, Greggs Advance At NCAA Championships

Sacramento, Calif. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) advanced to the final of the 200-meters and anchored the women’s 4×400-meter relay to a victory in its preliminary heat to lead the third-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
Greggs, the ACC and NCAA East Regional Champion, won both of her 200-meter preliminary heats to move into Saturday evening’s final. She posted a time of 23.24 seconds in the opening round and came back two hours later to record a time of 22.85 seconds in the semifinals, the second fastest time of the preliminaries.
Greggs ended the evening anchoring the 4×400-meter relay to a victory in its preliminary heat. The All-American relay of senior Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas), sophomore Ginou Etienne (Miami Central), freshman Lauren Austin (Oviedo, Fla.) and Greggs finished with a time of 3:30.20, the third fastest time of the preliminaries.
Junior All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) cruised into the semifinals of the 400-hurdles winning her preliminary heat in a time of 56.86 seconds. Darden, the ACC and NCAA East Regional Champion, posted the fourth fastest time of the opening round. The 400-hurdle semifinals are scheduled for Friday at 9:00 p.m. (PT).
Miami had two women qualify for the final of shot put. NCAA Indoor Champion Kim Barrett (Miami Gulliver Prep) needed just one throw to advance to Saturday’s final recording an automatic qualifying mark of 17.25 meters (56-07.25). Barrett’s mark was the best of the qualifying round.
Also reaching the final was senior Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) who recorded a personal-best mark of 15.96 meters (52-04.50).
Miami will be competing in its first final of Championship on Friday when the 4×100-meter relay hits the track at 6:40 p.m. (PT). Also competing on Friday will be Etienne in the 400-meter semifinals (7:40 p.m.), sophomore All-American Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) in the qualifying round of the triple jump (6:30 p.m.), Darden in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles (9:00 p.m.), and senior All-American Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.) in the first day of the heptathlon.
