Whitner, Neito Wrap Up Play at the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate

BAYLOR, TEXAS – Freshmen J.C. Whitner posted an overall singles record of 3-2, highlighted by a berth into the finals of one of two consolation draws Sunday, to wrap up play at the three-day Baylor HEB Intercollegiate held on the campus of Baylor University.

After falling to New Mexico State’s Gustave Drep in the round of 32 of the tournament, which consisted of two 64-player single draws (gold and green) and two 32-team doubles draws (gold and green), Whitner moved to the consolation draw of the green bracket.

In the round of 16 of the consolation draw, Whitner upended Rice’s Filip Zivojinovic before claiming a victory over Texas-San Antonio’s Nate Avila in the quarterfinals.

Whitner knocked off New Mexico State’s Jeff Pfeifer in the semifinals but could not overtake Rice’s Dennis Polyakov in the final round.

Fellow classmate Hector Neito opened play Friday with a win over Lamar’s Emmanuel Oliver in the opening draw before falling to Texas-Arlington’s Alberto Agis in the round of 32 in the green draw.

In doubles, the pair fell in the quarterfinal round of the green draw to Rice’s Polyakov and Jon Greenberg.
