Women's Tennis Wrap-up Their First Day of the Third Annual Hurricane Fall Invitational

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team ended their first day of the third annual Hurricane Fall Invitational with four wins in singles and five in doubles.

Miami has invited three state-rivals including ACC foe Florida State, cross-town rival FIU, and FAU to participate in this weekend’s tournament, along with the University of Iowa and another ACC opponent Clemson.

In women’s singles, Laura Vallverdu defeated Nicola Slater of FSU 6-1, 6-3 to kick-off the #1 Draw. In the #2 Draw, Audrey Banada finished with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Iowa’s Milica Veselinovic, while Romy Farah moved to the next round due to a walk over. Gina Sabatino also advanced with a win, as she defeated Kelcie Klockenga of Iowa 7-5, 6-1 in the #4 Draw.

Caren Seenauth finished the #3 Draw with a loss to Miranda Foley of Florida State, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, while Emily Mowrey was also defeated, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Maria Vallasciani of FIU in the #5 Draw, as both player will compete in the backdraw with hopes of coming away with a win. Seenauth will face Selma Babic of Clemson, and Mowrey will take on Pia Terol of FAU on Saturday.

Tomorrow will see singles matches beginning in the #1 Draw as Laura Vallverdu will take on Paula Zabala of FIU. Audrey Banada will face Jessica Wente of FSU in the #2 Draw. In the # 3 Draw, Romy Farah will seek to come away with a win over FIU’s Hillary Mintz.

In doubles, Audrey Banada and Romy Farah won their first doubles A match of the day 8-6 over Pula Zabala and Fountain of Clemson. They advanced to the next round, where they defeated another Clemson squad, Mari Brito and Alexandra Luc 8-2. Tomorrow the Hurricane duo will take on Carol Salge and Ani Mijackika of Clemson. In doubles B, Caren Seenauth and Gina Sabatino finished with a loss against Jessica Wente and Miranda Foley of Florida State, 8-5. In doubles C, Emily Mowrey partnered up with Cathy Gerber of Clemson, to defeat Katherine Bartnik and Pia Terol of FAU, 8-3, but came up short against Milica Veselinovic and Merel Beelen of Iowa, 8-5.

In the doubles B backdraw, Gina Sabatino and Caren Seenauth defeated Kelcie Klockenga and Jacqueline Lee of Iowa 8-4, and will take on Selma Babic and Samantha Eppelsheimer of Clemson Saturday.

The six-team tournament will continue their second day tomorrow beginning 8:30 a.m.
