FAU Downs Miami, 184.5-115.5, To Even Season Series

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After coming away with a 165.5-132.5 win over Florida Atlantic in the fall, the University of Miami swimming and diving team was looking for the season sweep Saturday but the Owls picked up a 184.5-115.5 win over the Hurricanes at the FAU Pool in UM’s final meet before the 2008 ACC Championships.
Ryann Labreche, Annika Saarnak, Capria DeVenuto and Brittany Viola all picked up individual wins for Miami, as the `Canes dropped to 8-3 on the season.
Labreche won the 1650-yard freestyle event in a time of 17:19.84, beating out second place finisher, FAU’s Brittany Fabry, who came in at 17:23.37. Saarnak won the 200-yard freestyle event in her fastest time of the season, 1:53.07, and DeVenuto won the 100-yard butterfly, coming in at 1:01.06.
Viola was victorious in the three-meter diving event with a score of 286.70 but was edged out in the one-meter event, scoring a 279.05, just over a point behind FAU’s Lisa Thompson who won with a mark of 280.20.
Miami finished second in both of its relay events against the Owls. In the 400-yard medley relay, FAU’s team of Lindsey Alexander, Kalina Neal, Jessica Lampkin and Jennifer Forcht came in just ahead of UM’s team of Britta Boesing, Magdalena Waszkiewicz, Katie Eason and Kirsten Pomerleau, 3:55.40-to-3:56.74. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Saarnak, Elisabeth Torres, Emerson Davis and Marina Dadic finished second with a time of 3:36.62.
The `Canes previous win over the Owls came on Nov. 9 at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
Miami will now use the next two weeks to prepare for the ACC Championships in Atlanta, Feb. 20-23.
