Garcia, Severino Taken on Day Two of MLB Draft

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior right-hander Enrique Garcia and junior outfielder Adan Severino became the seventh and eighth University of Miami Hurricanes selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft Friday.

Garcia, who had been drafted the previous four years, was selected as the 719th pick in the 24th round by the Cincinnati Reds. He is 14-6 in two seasons with the Hurricanes while compiling a 4.26 earned run average. Thus far in 2008, he is 6-2 with a 4.80 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 75 innings.

Severino was selected in the 26th round by the Minnesota Twins as the 786th pick overall. He hit .317 with 46 hits in 51 games in his first season with Miami. He homered four times and drove in 21 runs.

In all, the Hurricanes had eight players taken in the amateur draft – junior first baseman Yonder Alonso (7th overall, 1st round to the Cincinnati Reds), junior second baseman Jemile Weeks (12th overall, 1st round to the Oakland Athletics), Carlos Gutierrez (27th overall, 1st round to the Minnesota Twins), junior right fielder Dennis Raben (66th overall, 2nd round to the Seattle Mariners), junior centerfielder Blake Tekotte (101st overall, 3rd round to the San Diego Padres), sophomore third baseman Mark Sobolewski (129th overall, fourth round to the Toronto Blue Jays).
