Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team, ranked No. 13 in the nation, cruised to a 7-0 victory over south Florida opponent Florida Atlantic University on Saturday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

For the second consecutive day, Miami (2-0) unleashed a powerful assault on an in-state opponent with a lethal lineup assembled by head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews during the off-season. The Hurricanes continued their dominance over FAU (0-3) in women’s tennis action, upping their all-time record to 26-0 against the Owls.

Things started off in doubles play for UM with the No. 14 ranked doubles duo of Bianca Eichkorn and Michaela Kissell, cruising to an 8-2 decision over Florida Atlantic’s Erika Mrazkova and Danielle Simone at the No. 2 position.

At the No. 1 doubles spot, the team of sophomore Julia Cohen and junior Laura Vallverdu breezed through FAU’s combination of Dominique Wimmer and Natalia Totevska, 8-1. The Hurricanes duo looks to be as impressive as ever, never trailing at any point in their first two doubles matches in the spring. The final doubles point at No. 3 was won by UM’s Alessa Waibel and Jenna Osborne, playing together for the first time all year. They defeated FAU’s Emma Rossiter and Cassie Bergeson, 8-2.

After sweeping the doubles matches, Miami rolled into singles play with the 1-0 advantage on the day.

Julia Cohen, ranked No. 8 in the nation, quickly ran her record for the year out to 2-0 in dual play as she swept through FAU’s Natalia Totevska at the No. 1 position. The Philadelphia native has yet to trail in her first two dual matches of the spring, and has won five of her last six matches dating back to the fall tournament season.

Laura Vallverdu is ranked No. 114 in the nation–while serving as a two-time All-America performer for the Hurricanes, and used a 6-1, 6-1 match victory over Dominique Wimmer at the No. 2 position.

No. 50 Michaela Kissell made quick work of FAU’s Erika Mrazkova in the No 3 spot, 6-1, 6-0, while classmate and 20th-ranked Bianca Eichkorn collected a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot for the Orange and Green.

Junior Claudia Wasilewski netted her second consecutive win of the year courtesy a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Danielle Simone at the No. 5 position, while freshman Lauren Greco upped her record to 2-0 in the spring with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cassie Bergeson at No. 6.

The `Canes return to the court on Wednesday, January 28 hosting fellow Dade County rival FIU at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 2 p.m. Admission is free to the public, and everyone is invited to attend.
