Former Hurricane Named to Women's Professional Soccer Roster

CORAL GABLES –  Former University of Miami women’s soccer player, Sheuneen Ta has been added to the roster of the Washington Freedom of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS).

Ta was a member of the Hurricanes from 2003-2007.  In her career, she played in 66 matches and is tied for sixth place with 13 assists on Miami’s all-time list.  As a captain in 2007 Ta lead the Hurricanes to the team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001 and to upset victories of Top 10 ranked Boston College, and the defending National Champion University of North Carolina.

“The WPS is providing an arena for the most talented soccer players in the world to compete and I am very proud of Sheuneen for creating this opportunity.  She was an instrumental part of building Miami soccer to national prominence and I believe she is one of the most creative, talented, and mentally tough players I have coached.  All of us at Miami wish her the best in her professional endeavors.”

The London, England native and former English Youth National Team player was added to the Freedom roster as one of nine midfielders on the 27-player roster.  The roster, which includes Team USA player Abby Wambach, will need to be cut to 24 players by March 13, two days after the Freedom host Sky Blue FC in the preseason opener for Washington, and need to be finalized by March 25.  Of the 27 players currently on the Freedom’s roster, 7 played their collegiate soccer in the ACC.

The WPS was founded in September of 2007 and is the highest level women’s professional soccer league in North America.  Play will begin in April of this year with seven franchises in the inaugural season.  Teams are located in Washington, D.C., Boston, New Jersey/New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Los Angeles and the Bay Area.
