CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams head to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete in the illustrious Tyson Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13 at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
The Hurricanes are one of 56 schools that will be participating this weekend and one of four Atlantic Coast Conference programs that are looking to improve their seeding for the ACC Indoor Championships in just two weeks.
Both the men’s and women’s teams feature a strong hurdles group with juniors Ti’erra Brown and Takecia Jameson leading the women and Cory Nelms and Devon Hill pacing the men. Brown is currently ranked fifth nationally in the 60m hurdles, while Hill and Nelms hold the seventh and 12 spot, respectively.
Also garnering a national ranking is Ashley Dukes. The Hollywood, Fla. native is ranked eighth in the 60m dash after her time of 7.33 seconds at Penn State’s National Invitational two weeks ago. Dukes will be joined by Tara Thomas in the 60m prelims Friday afternoon.
Senior jumper Deandra Doyley has impressed since the first meet of the season as she has won all three long jump competitions she has taken part in so far this season, earning a No. 10 ranking at 6.26m (20-6.50). The Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. native will compete in the long jump invitational Friday evening as well as the triple jump invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Britney Clarke, Christina Madry and Brittni Finch will all compete in the open long jump, with Madry and Finch also taking part in the open triple jump.
In the 200m dash, Takecia and Tameka Jameson will team up with Thomas in a field that will hold a total of 29 preliminary heats. Tameka will also pair up with Kristy Whyte in the 400m dash.
Miranda Wilson will compete in both the shot put and the weight throw. Earlier this season, Wilson moved into fourth place on the school’s all-time list with a mark of 17.44m (57-02.75) in the weight throw.
The men’s 60m dash will feature four members of the Hurricanes football team, as Travis Benjamin, Nelms, DeMarcus VanDyke and Lamar Miller will each be competing over the weekend. VanDyke will also race in the 200m dash.
Another star on the gridiron, Brandon Harris will be joined by Patrick Blackie in the 400m dash and Greg Kaczka, Brian Laskowski and Matthew Wilson will race in the 800m run.
