Miami to Face Wake Forest in ACC Tournament

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the first Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament game, Thursday, March 4 at 11 a.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Hurricanes head into the ACC Tournament coming off a dramatic 76-68 overtime victory over Boston College in the season finale. Down by nine points with 1:32 remaining in regulation, Shenise Johnson scored seven straight, before a Morgan Stroman layup with one second remaining forced the overtime period. In the extra frame senior Diane Barnes took over, with seven of her 12 points and four rebounds. Riquna Williams led all scorers with 27 points, hitting five three-pointers along the way.
On Monday, it was announced that Johnson earned First Team All-ACC accolades and that Williams garnered Second Team honors. Among the 10 ACC players on the first two teams, Williams and Johnson are the only sophomores.
A Look at the Demon Deacons
Wake Forest, the No. 5 seed, enters the ACC Tournament with a 7-7 conference record, winning three of its last five contests.
The Demon Deacons are led by Brittany Waters who is averaging 13.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Secily Ray and Sandra Garcia score 11.1 and 9.7 points per game apiece. Brooke Thomas leads the team with 117 assists on the season.
Wake Forest is averaging 61.7 points and 57.4 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 37.3 percent (630-1689) from the floor, 29.0 percent (164-566) from beyond the arc and 66.5 percent (365-549) from the free throw line. The Demon Deacons also register 10.4 steals and 3.1 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 57.4 points per game and a shooting percentage of 37.9 (583-1539).
The Series
Miami and Wake Forest have met eight times previously with the Demon Deacons holding a slight 5-3 edge in the all-time series. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in the ACC Championship. In January, Wake Forest pulled out a 67-64 victory, after it held a 19-point second-half lead. Johnson and Williams led Miami on a furious comeback attempt scoring 19 and 17 points respectively. Diane Barnes also scored in double-figures, adding 10 points.
