Clemson, S.C.The No. 35 University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped a close match to No. 47 Clemson, 4-3, in Atlantic Coast Conference road competition on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers (14-0, 1-0 ACC) remain perfect on the season at 14-0 by winning their ACC opener, while the Hurricanes (5-4, 0-2) dropped their second match in conference play.

Miami’s 60th-ranked duo of Christian Blocker and David Simon cruised past their Clemson opponents in the No. 1 position, 8-2, to get the Hurricanes off to a strong start. UM’s No. 2 tandem of Keith Crowley and Hector Nieto clinched the singles point for the ‘Canes and improved to 7-0 this season with the 8-6 win at No. 2.

Blocker improved to 12-6 this season in singles play with the 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory at No. 2 to put Miami up 2-1. But Clemson responded with three-straight singles decision to take the 3-2 advantage.

Simon’s straight-sets win at No. 6 knotted the match at 3-all – and gave him his team-leading 13th singles win of the year. But the Tigers would rally and clinch the 4-3 victory with the 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 win by Zachary Rigsby at the No. 5 spot.

“You have to give Clemson credit,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “They played us tight in every position. We will regroup, but it doesn’t get any easier at Georgia Tech tomorrow.”

The Hurricanes play the Yellow Jackets tomorrow at Noon.
