Coral Gables, Fla. – The 41st-ranked and eighth-seeded University of Miami men’s tennis team opens Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament play versus 51st-ranked and ninth-seeded NC State on Thurs., Apr. 22, at 9 a.m. at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The Hurricanes (10-10, 4-6 ACC), winners of four straight – including Friday’s 4-3 comeback over No. 14 Duke – defeated the Wolfpack (15-11, 3-8), 5-2, in their lone meeting this season on Apr. 4 in Coral Gables. Miami has not lost since then and leads the all-time series versus NC State, 11-1.
Jumping five spots in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll, the Hurricanes are among the nation’s hottest teams and are led by junior Christian Blöcker (16-13), ranked 122nd among the nation’s singles players, and their top doubles tandem of Blöcker and senior David Simon, who are 81st in the latest poll with a team-best 16-10 record.
Simon has also been strong in singles action, winning six of his last seven matches en route to a team-leading 21-9 record – including an 8-2 record versus conference competition. Waylon Chin has won six-straight matches for Miami and brings a 14-10 mark into tournament play.
In 2009, the Hurricanes advanced to the ACC semifinals – including a 4-3 quarterfinal win over the Wolfpack.
The winner of Thursday’s match advances to Friday’s 9 a.m. quarterfinals versus top-ranked Virginia (32-1, 11-0), who has won three-straight — and five of the last six – ACC titles.
