Miami's Chris Hernandez Named ACC Pitcher of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami junior left-hander Chris Hernandez has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. The award is the second for Hernandez this season, the third for his career and fourth ACC weekly honor for a Hurricane this season.

Hernandez won his team-leading seventh game of the season in Miami’s 6-0 shutout win over Barry University Friday night. In six innings of work, Hernandez allowed just two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high 13 of the 21 batters he faced.

Hernandez recorded multiple strikeouts in five of his six innings, including striking out five of the first seven batters he faced and five of the last six. Hernandez combined with relievers E.J. Encinosa, Sam Robinson and Eric Whaley to record a season-high 19 strikeouts as a staff and secure the team’s fourth shut-out of the season.

On the year, Hernandez is tied for second in the ACC in wins (7) while ranking fifth in ERA (3.04) and sixth in strikeouts (76).

Hernandez’s previous ACC Pitcher of the Week honors came earlier this year after he tossed his first career complete game at Duke and during in 2008 when he struck out 11 and held Virginia scoreless in eight innings of work. In addition to Hernandez’s two 2010 honors, David Gutierrez (pitcher) and Yasmani Grandal (player) have also earned weekly honors for Miami this year.

Clemson’s junior outfielder Kyle Parker earned Player of the Week honors after going 10-for-16 (.625) with five doubles, one homer, seven RBI and seven runs scored in leading Clemson to a 4-0 record last week.

The Hurricanes will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at Georgia Tech, May 14-16, at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.
