Hankerson Earns National Award, Building All-American Resume

CORAL GABLES – Miami senior wide receiver Leonard Hankerson is quickly making a very strong case for National Awards and All-America honors.

On Sunday, he was named the National Wide Receiver of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards after a career day – seven receptions, 147 yards, three touchdowns – against Clemson. The same outlet named him an honorable mention WR of the week after he had two TD receptions and 115 yards against FAMU.

The ‘Canes top wide receiver has six TD receptions on the season, which is the second highest total in college football. He also ranks 13th in receiving yards per game with 97.0. 

Hankerson  leads the ACC in TD receptions (6) and ranks second in scoring (9.0 points per game) and receiving yards (97.0 per game).

The Fort Lauderdale native extended his streak of games with a reception to 17, while also notching the second multi-touchdown game of the season and career and third 100-yard game of his career.  Hankerson’s three-receiving touchdowns in the first half was the first time since 1998 that a ‘Cane has had three TD receptions in a game. Santana Moss had three against Rutgers on Oct.3, 1998.

Hankerson also moved into a tie for sixth place all-time in career touchdown receptions. He now has 15 career touchdown receptions tying Brian Blades (1984-87).

The Canes leading wide receiver has several teammates posting numbers worthy of national awards and All-America campaigns including, Sean Spence, Brandon Harris, Allen Bailey Olivier Vernon, Matt Bosher, Orlando Franklin and Marcus Forston.

Hankerson will be back in action on Saturday night at 8, when the No. 13/15 Hurricanes host No. 23/24 Florida State at Sun Life Stadium.
