Feb. 14, 2011

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team moved up one spot to No. 9 in the latest Campbell/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released Monday.

The Hurricanes improved to 5-0 this season with two more wins over ranked opposition this past weekend. Miami swept No. 57 FIU, 7-0, on Friday before cruising past No. 15 Florida State, 6-1, on Sunday in its ACC opener. Four of the Hurricanes’ five wins this season have now come against ranked opposition.

Singles and doubles rankings were also released for the first time since the preseason and All-America senior Bianca Eichkorn came in at No. 10 after opening the season a perfect 5-0 in the Hurricanes’ top singles spot. She was previously ranked 16th heading into the spring.

Eichkorn was joined in the rankings by Anna Bartenstein – who jumped 35 spots from 98th to 63rd – and Gabriela Mejia, who re-entered the singles rankings at No. 115.

In the doubles poll, Eichkorn and Bartenstein moved up four spots to No. 42.

Stanford continues to sit atop the women’s poll, while Florida, Baylor, North Carolina and California round out the Top 5. Duke, UCLA, Michigan rank sixth, seventh and eighth, while Georgia moves up two spots to No. 10.

This weekend, Miami and 15 other of the nation’s best teams will be competing in the ITA Indoor National Championships in Charlottesville, Va. Match-ups for the event have yet to be determined.
