Hurricanes Divers In Action at Zone Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – Freshman male diver Samuel Dorman earned an NCAA Championships qualifying score on the 1-meter springboard Thursday afternoon, competing in the NCAA Diving “B” Zone Qualifier housed in Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
In order for a student-athlete to compete in the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, he or she must dive in their respective events in his/her zone qualifier, and perform the required five dives (with an option of six) and accumulate a qualifying score for the finals event following the preliminary round.
Dorman, the only men’s diver for the second consecutive year under veteran Olympic diving coach Randy Ableman, finished fourth overall in the men’s 1-meter event, turning in a finals score of 374.90. Dorman was just one point shy of third place, held by Tennessee’s Michael Wright. First place was captured by Florida State’s Landon Marzullo with a score of 386.45.
The Tucson, Ariz., native turned in his best dive in his final attempt – an Inward 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck – landing him a score of 69.75 by the judges. He also nailed a 63-point dive with a Back 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck in his second-to-last dive.
On the women’s side, Thea Vock, Carrie Dragland and Lindsay Lester were in action, competing in the 3-meter springboard.
With all three divers qualifying for the finals, it was freshman Thea Vock finishing as the highest Hurricanes performer with a fifth place finish, and a score of 630.80. Lester was 10th with a score of 602.60, and Dragland finished just behind her in 11th place with 600.85.
Vock, a native of Clermont, Fla., had a finals round score-set that included four 50-plus point dives from the judges. Her best dive – Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck – allowed her to tie for the highest score on a single dive by a Hurricanes performer with a 63.00. Lindsay Lester also turned in a 63 in her second dive of the finals; she too performing a Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck.
Dragland, a junior transfer from the University of Alabama, tallied two 57-point scores in the finals. She turned in the first on her third dive, a Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 1 Twist Pike. The other came in her fifth-of-six attempts, completing a Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Pike.
All four divers, men and women, will be back in action again tomorrow, as the event runs through Saturday.
