Miami Women Victorious at FGCU Invitational

FT. MYERS, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s cross country team opened the 2011 season in stellar fashion Friday evening, winning the FGCU Invitational on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast. The Hurricane men finished in second place.
Sophomores Lindsi Arrington and Brooke Dovell led the way for the Canes on the five-kilometer course, finishing second and third overall with times of 18:52.40 and 19:10.40 respectively.
“Brooke and Lindsi ran very conservatively and worked themselves up through the race,” said assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths.
In her collegiate debut, Ally Finical crossed the finish line in seventh place, with teammates Allison Ludwick and Casey Crist close behind, finishing eighth and ninth.
“Ally, Allison and Casey ran very well today,” added Griffiths. “It’s always good to open the season with momentum.”
As a team, the women finished with 29 points, with Florida Gulf Coast totaling 51 for second place.
A sophomore also led the men’s squad as Augusta, Maine native Luke Fontaine raced around the four-mile course in 20:42.40, finishing third overall. He was followed by junior Greg Kaczka (21:01.90) and fellow sophomore Connor Adams (21:10.90), who finished fifth and seventh overall.
“The men packed up well early,” said Griffiths. “But they needed to be more assertive on the pace.”
JaCee Jarnagin and Phillip Wood rounded out the Top-5 for the Canes, clocking times of 21:29.40 and 21:30.60.
In all, the men totaled 38 points, behind only host Florida Gulf Coast’s 30.
“I am very pleased with the overall effort of the team,” concluded Griffiths. “We came into today’s meet looking to work on pack running.
“I think both teams are ahead of where they were last season at this time, but we have to continue to get better each day.”
Miami will be back at it one week from tonight when the visit Tampa to race in the USF Invitational on Sept. 9.
