Fontaine Leads Men at Bulls Cross Country Invite

TAMPA – Behind sophomore Luke Fontaine and junior Greg Kaczka, the University of Miami men’s cross country team raced to a second place finish at the Bulls Cross Country Invitational at USF’s Claw Golf Course on Friday evening.
The Hurricane women placed eighth behind the strong performances of sophomores Brooke Dovell and Lindsi Arrington.
For the second consecutive weekend, Fontaine led the men’s squad, this time finishing second overall on the 8-kilometer course in 25:54.01. Kaczka also place among the top 10 for in consecutive races, crossing the finish line right behind Fontaine in third place at 25:59.40.
Sophomores Connor Adams (13th – 26:18.08), JaCee Jarnigan (15th – 26:32.66) and Sean Pezzulo (29th – 26:58.57) also scored for the men, who scored a combined 62 points, trailing only Florida.
“Luke and Greg were big today for us and JaCee continues to improve with every meet,” said assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths.
“I am very proud of the way the men competed today,” added Griffiths. “They worked the packs and really earned their second place finish.”
Dovell was the top finisher for the women’s squad, racing around the 5-kilometer course in 18:27.27, placing 12th overall. Her fellow classmate, Arrington, finished just three spots behind in 18:33.34.
“Brooke and Lindsi ran with the lead pack and looked good,” said Griffiths about his two sophomore leaders. “They look better each week.”
Upperclassmen Allison Ludwick (19:45.28), Casey Crist (19:54.52) and Jennifer Estime (20:38.83) rounded out the top five for the women, who are competing with limited numbers in the early going.
“Some of the women runners are dealing with injuries, but I feel they should be back to full strength in time for Gainesville,” concluded Griffiths.
Miami will next compete in the Mountain Dew Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida on Saturday, Sept. 24.
