Hurricanes Resume Competition Friday at Virginia Tech Elite Meet

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The University of Miami track and field team returns to the oval February 3-4 as they take part in the Virginia Tech Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Va.

The Hurricanes are one of 10 teams battling in the meet at the Rector Field House. Miami will face stiff competition from five teams from the ACC (Georgia Tech, Maryland, NC State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest), three teams from the SEC (Auburn, Florida, and Georgia), and one representative from the Big East (Louisville).

“This weekend’s meet will give us a a good indication of where we are in the ACC,” said Director of Track & Field Amy Deem. “The Virginia Tech Invite is always competitive and we have performed well on that track in the past.”

Kicking off the competition on day one of the two-day meet will be the women’s long jump and women’s weight throw events at 5 p.m.  Looking to provide impressive marks in the weight throw will be seniors Ashley Holmes and Miranda Wilson.

Freshman jumper Innocent Jacob looks to continue his strong start as he and senior Jason Johnson compete in the long jump on Friday. New school record-holder Connor Adams is hoping to improve his time in the mile event, while All-American Devon Hill will be joined by freshman Christian Cook as they  take the line in the 60-meter hurdles.

ACC 200-meter champion Tarika Williams will run her shorter distance, the 60-meters, alongside sophomores Alyssa McClure and Jasmine King and freshman Jokira Jiles. regional-qualifier in the 400-meter Hurdles, Thandi Stewart begins her sophomore campaign as she and freshman Shannon Wright run in the Invitational 400-meters.
