Canes Earn Bronze Medal on Day One

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Miami Hurricanes swimming team enjoyed an impressive first at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, earning a bronze medal in one of Wednesday’s two events held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
The Hurricanes 200-yard medley relay team, comprised of junior Hannah Kling, junior Sofia Johansson, freshman Lucy Worrall and senior Kelsi Hall, finished the day’s first event in third place with a time of 1:40.10.
“Beautiful start to our ACC championships tonight,” Head Coach Christie Shefchunas said after the day’s action. “The girls’ splits were very fast and it gives them huge confidence for their individual races this week.”
Though the Canes recorded only a tenth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, Shefchunas remained positive with her team’s performance. Worral, racing in her first ever postseason for the Canes, recorded the highest splits for any swimmer in the event since Shefchunas’ arrival in Coral Gables.
“Our 800-free relay is definitely our weakest relay but the girls really stepped up and had some great splits,” Shefchunas said. “We’re all looking forward to the week ahead.”
The championship continues Thursday with the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, and 50-yard freestyle preliminaries at 11 a.m. Finals in those events, along with the 200-yard freestyle relay, will begin at 7 p.m. The women’s one-meter diving prelims are at 3:15 p.m. with the finals at 5 p.m.
