Canes Conclude Regular Season at No. 3 Virginia

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – On Sunday, April 15, the No. 63 University of Miami men’s tennis team concluded its regular season schedule with a 6-1 loss to the No. 3 University of Virginia Cavaliers at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
“We played a good match at No. 2 doubles, and served for the match, but couldn’t close it out,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “Wilfredo played a great set against the No. 1 player in the country. There were some positives to take away from this match as we get ready to play in the ACC Tournament.”
The high point of the day for the Canes took place in singles play when junior Mark Schanerman posted his first win as a Cane, defeating Philippe Oudshoorn in the No. 6 position, 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-5, in the only match of the day to go into the third set.
The rest of singles play didn’t end in favor of the Canes. Gabriel Flores took on No. 6 Jarmere Jenkins in the No. 1 position. The match ended in a 6-3, 6-1 victory for Jenkins. In the No. 2 spot, Omar Aly played against No. 47 Alex Domijan, falling 6-3, 6-1.
Freshman Wilfredo Gonzalez played against No. 1 Mitchell Frank, a fellow freshman at UVA. Frank took down Gonzalez 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3.
Diego Soto was defeated by Drew Courtney at the No. 4 spot, falling 6-3, 6-2. At No. 5, Henrique Tsukamoto was beaten by No. 86 Justin Shane, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, the Cavaliers won all three doubles matches and subsequently the doubles point of the day. The No. 18 duo of Drew Courtney and Jarmere Jenkins took down Wilfredo Gonzalez and Henrique Tsukamoto in the No. 1 position, posting an 8-3 win against the pair.
Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank played against Omar Aly and Mark Schanerman at No. 2, defeating the Canes’ duo 8-7(1). Finally, Diego Soto and Marco Stancati were defeated by Steven Rooda and Santiago Villegas, 8-4, in the No. 3 spot.
Now that the Canes’ regular season schedule is complete, the team travels to Cary, N.C., next week to battle in the ACC Championships. The tournament will be held Thursday, April 19 to Sunday, April 22.
