Three @MiamiWBB Players to Graduate Friday
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball players are set to walk across the stage at graduation this week.
Seniors Maria Brown and Krystal Saunders, along with redshirt junior Jassany Williams, will each earn their bachelor’s degrees from the University of Miami on Friday.
Brown and Saunders finished their careers among the winningest players in program history, with 91 wins and four postseason appearances, including three NCAA tournaments.
A Monroe, La., native, Brown will receive her degree in human and social development with a double minor in psychology and English. Brown played in 126 games in her four years at Miami, and was selected a co-captain prior to her final season. Off the court, Brown has been active in the community, working extensively with the YES Institute. Brown has also worked with Shake-A-Leg Miami, an organization that offers interactive programs for disabled youngsters and adults across South Florida.
Graduating with a degree in sports administration and a minor in psychology, Saunders finished her career at Miami among the top 10 in career three-pointers made. Named one of two team captains prior to the 2013-14 season, Saunders fought through personal tragedy to lead the Hurricanes to their fifth straight postseason.
Williams will return to the Hurricanes team next season, but is set to earn her bachelor’s degree in media management this weekend. The 6-2 forward from Davie, Fla., averaged 5.5 ppg in her first season with the Hurricanes after transferring from Auburn.
This spring more than 3,500 University of Miami undergraduate and graduate students will begin a new chapter in their lives by graduating to new careers or graduate school, among other adventures. During Commencement ceremonies, which mark the launch of a new era in the lives of students, graduates from all of UM’s schools and colleges will be recognized by name and will walk across the stage to be congratulated by President Donna E. Shalala and their academic dean. With research papers, labs and final exams completed, these students will go on to embark on new journeys. According to a survey conducted by the UM Toppel Career Center on graduating students from last year (May 2013), 62 percent had full-time job offers within six months of graduation, with an average base annual starting salary of $47,700. Roughly 28 percent of that same graduating class enrolled in graduate school. The UM Commencement ceremony is open to graduates and their guests.
