Salas Drafted by Milwaukee in 10th Round

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami senior righthander Javi Salas was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 10th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Friday afternoon, becoming the fifth Hurricane to be selected over the first two days of the draft.

Salas, who was drafted by Minnesota in 2013 after an impressive junior season, elected to return to school for his final season. The two-time team captain was picked with the 296th overall selection by Milwaukee.

Salas saw action in 14 games this spring, including eight starts. He finished the season 4-3 with a 2.92 ERA in 52.1 innings, including just the second perfect game in program history against Villanova on March 4.

The Coral Gables native, who was inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society at the end of the season, was named ACC Pitcher of the Week after his historic perfect game. He tossed five shutout innings in back-to-back starts against UCF (April 9) and FAU (April 16), and served as one of Miami’s key bullpen arms late in the season.

Salas becomes the fifth Hurricane to be selected through the first 10 rounds of the draft, joining Andrew Suarez (second round, Washington Nationals), Chris Diaz (fifth round, Atlanta Braves), Dale Carey (seventh round, Washington) and Bryan Radziewski (ninth round, Houston Astros.). The 2014 MLB Draft continues this weekend, with rounds 3-10 taking place on Fri., June 6 at 1 p.m. The draft will resume with rounds 11-40 on Sat., June 7 at 1 p.m.
