Rookie Lomacki Gets First Career Wins
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team was split between two tournaments across the country and found success as one Cane advances to the quarterfinals and two advance to the semifinals.
Olympia Fields
At the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Heights, Ill., freshman Piotr Lomacki, a native of Warsaw, Poland, won his first collegiate career singles match today beating Quentin Monaghan from Notre Dame in a three-hour, three setter, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5). Lomacki also won his first career doubles match while paired with senior Wilfredo Gonzalez, defeating Quentin Monaghan and Eric Schnurrenberger from Notre Dame, 8-3. Sophomore Bernard Tefel also won his opening match at Olympia Heights, defeating Drew Dawson of Notre Dame (6-3, 6-3).
Senior Gonzalez lost in the first round to Andrew Watson from Memphis, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, and freshman Christian Langmo lost in a tough match against Eric Schnurrenberger from Notre Dame, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In their second doubles match, Gonzalez/Lomacki fell to hosts Jared Hiltzik and Tim Kopinski from Illinois in a hard fought match, 8-6.
Teammates Langmo and Tefel would fall in two straight matches first against Dawson/Montoya from Notre Dame, 8-7 (3) in a tiebreak and then lost 8-1 against the Robert Mudge Beck Bond pair from NC State.
Farnsworth Ivy Plus
At the Farnswoth Ivy Plus in Princeton, N.J., the Canes prevailed in some difficult matches.
In doubles action, Alexander Fahnehjelm and Henrique Tsukamoto defeated the duo of Jeremy Court and Thomas Spratt from the University of Pennsylvania, 8-5, giving freshman Fahnehjelm his first collegiate doubles victory. The Fahnehjelm/Tsukamoto pair would then fall against the No.1-seeded duo from Columbia, Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur, 8-2.
The freshmen pair of Nile Clark and Andrew Harrington fell in their first match, 8-3, against Dougie Barnard and Michael Fredericka duo from Notre Dame.
In singles, Tsukamoto lost in a two-set battle against Grant Solomon from Harvard, 7-5, 7-6 (9), then came back to win in the Lenz Consolation Draw to advance to the semifinals with a victory over Eliott Hureau from Binghamton, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.
Clark fought valiantly in his first round but lost in two very competitive sets, 7-5, 6-4 to Bert Vancura from Columbia. Clark then advanced to the semifinals of the Cordish Consolation Draw, defeating Colin Sinclair in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.
Fellow rookie Fahnehjelm was faced with difficult competition and lost in a pair of three-set matches, first to Kial Kaiser from Princeton, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-4 and then against Henry Steer from Harvard, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6.
