Rookie Ends Run at ITA in Consolation Bracket

University of Miami freshman Piotr Lomacki ended his stellar run at the ITA All-American Tennis Championships Friday afternoon with a straight-set loss in the consolation bracket.

“Piotr is capable of beating anyone, and he will only continue to get better,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “He is still getting used to the no-add scoring system. He’s never played with it before college, and it has taken him a while to adapt. He lost two or three no-add points in the first set, and had a hard time dealing with that.”

In the first round of the consolation bracket, the rookie Lomacki faced the overall No. 4 seed, Dane Webb. Lomacki battled in the first set, but fell 7-6 to the senior from the University of Oklahoma, dropping the tiebreaker 0-7. The pair played another tough match in the second set, with the senior overcoming the freshman, 7-5 to end Lomacki’s run in the event.

Lomacki was the first Hurricane since 2008 to play in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships. In 2008, former All-American Daniel Vallverdu was the No. 3 seed overall.

The Hurricanes will be back in action later this month at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., from Oct. 16-19.
