@MiamiTrack Earns 13 All-ACC Indoor Honors
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program had 13 All-ACC honors for the 2015 indoor track and field season.
Ten Hurricanes combined to earn Miami’s 13 all-conference selections. The Canes had six first team All-ACC honorees and seven spots on the All-ACC second team. First team All-ACC honors are earned by individuals placing in the top three in their respective events and the champion in the relay events. Second team All-ACC honors are bestowed upon athletes who finish fourth through sixth in their respective events and to the runner-up in the relay events.
Shakima Wimbley led the Miami women with a pair of first team All-ACC honors. The sophomore won gold in the women’s 200m with a personal-best time of 23.08 that ranks third in UM history. Wimbley broke the previous ACC Indoor Championships mark of 23.16 set by Miami’s Murielle Ahoure in 2009. With Wimbley’s successful defense of her 2014 gold medal, Miami student-athletes now own six all-time first-place finishes in the women’s 200 meters at the ACC Indoors. She also earned first team All-ACC honors when she finished second in the women’s 400m final with a time of 52.15 seconds.
John-Patrick Friday earned the most All-ACC honors, earning one first team selection in the high jump and second-team honors in both the long jump and triple jump. The junior earned a bronze medal in the men’s high jump, clearing a personal-best 2.11m to set a new UM indoor record. Friday broke a nearly decade-old record, surpassing Elan Daviglas’ mark of 2.08m set in 2006. He also placed fifth in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 15.50m and fifth in the long jump with a mark of 7.40m. Friday accounted for 13.50 of the Hurricane men’s 37.5 points at the 2015 ACC Indoor Championships.
Senior Lea Johnson earned first team All-ACC, repeating as the ACC Indoor Champion in the women’s weight throw with a personal-best mark of 21.45m that ranks second all-time in UM history. The senior was second heading into the finals with a mark of 20.01m, but she posted her winning throw on her fifth attempt of the night to earn her second consecutive ACC Indoor Championship in the women’s weight throw.
Tiffany Okieme also earned first team All-ACC in the women’s weight throw, earning a bronze medal with her personal-best throw of 21.16m. The junior finished third in her inaugural ACC Indoor Championships and also moved into third place in UM history.
Senior Christian Cook was the final first team All-ACC honoree from the Canes, claiming a gold medal in the men’s 60m hurdles. Cook’s personal-best time of 7.79 seconds in the final ranks third in UM history and assured that Miami claimed the ACC Championship men’s 60-meter hurdles gold medal for the fifth time in seven seasons.
Five more Canes earned second team All-ACC honors at the 2015 ACC Indoor Championships.
Carlos Mangum set a new school record in the men’s weight throw, posting a mark of 19.95m to earn a fifth place finish. Josh Johnson finished sixth in the men’s 60m final with a time of 6.92 seconds. Stefani Kerrison placed sixth in the women’s 60m hurdles final with a time of 8.50 seconds. Kelsey Balkwill placed sixth overall in the women’s 400m final with a personal-best time of 54.14 seconds. David Njoku placed sixth in the men’s high jump, clearing 2.05m.
