@CanesRowing Ready for Head of the Hooch
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The University of Miami rowing team will compete in its final event of the 2015 fall season, the Head of the Hooch.
A year ago, the Canes had four boats compete at the Head of the Hooch, but the 2015 Hurricanes have 10 entries in this year’s Head of the Hooch regatta. Miami head coach Dave Sanderson is excited to see how the Hurricanes will close out their fall season.
“The whole team is excited for the racing this weekend,” Sanderson said. “They have been working hard in practice and want to test themselves this weekend. The varsity will row in a combination of events from eights to fours to pairs and the freshmen/novices will wear the “U” proudly on their uniform as they race for the Hurricanes for their first time.”
The two-day regatta begins on Saturday and Miami will have several boats on the water in Chattanooga. The Hurricanes have two entries in the women’s Championships 8+ event set to begin at 11:14 a.m. and two entries in the women’s Championship 4+ event scheduled for 4:07 p.m. Miami will also have an entry in the women’s College & Club Novice 8+ event scheduled for 2:29 p.m.
Sunday’s action will feature five entries, including two boats in the Women’s Open 8+ event scheduled for 12:53 p.m. The Canes will also have four boats competing in the Women’s Open 2- event that is set to begin at 12:13 p.m.
The Head of the Hooch is one of the world’s largest rowing regattas, with 2,000+ boats racing over two days. More than 9,000 seats are rowed. 1,200 boats compete on Saturday alone, more in one day than any other regatta. Participants come from over 200 different organizations and in 2012 the regatta welcomed crews from 27 different states. The Head of the Hooch has seen a growth in entries from other countries. The regatta has hosted teams from Canada, Germany, Sweden and Australia.
More information on the Head of the Hooch is available at the regatta’s official website.
The Canes competed at the Head of the Indian Creek and Head of the Charles heading into this weekend’s Head of the Hooch. Miami will return to competitive racing in the spring championship season beginning in 2016.
