@CanesTrack Women Leads the ACC at No.15
NEW ORLEANS – The University of Miami’s women’s track and field team is ranked No. 15 in the latest edition of the USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings.
The Hurricanes are the highest ranked ACC women’s team in the USTFCCCA outdoor Top 25, released Monday. Miami is now the highest ranked ACC team for the second time this year. The Canes had been ranked as high as No. 15 during the 2016 indoor season.
The National Team Computer Rankings are complied by a mathematical formula based on national descending order lists. Marks from the previous outdoor season — not this past indoor season that just finished — are counted until enough data can be collected from the current season. Then, past data is dropped and only data from the current campaign is used from there on out.
Miami has 13 different marks that contributed to its team score of 117.47 points. The Hurricanes moved up six spots from No. 21 in the 2016 preseason outdoor rankings.
Five of the 13 scored marks were recorded this season, while the remaining eight carry over from 2015 performances. The most recent scored performance come from the past weekend’s Texas Relays, where Miami’s 4x100m relay team of Shakima Wimbley, Carolyn Brown, Aiyanna Stiverne and Ebony Morrison posted a time of 44.33 seconds. The Canes also have Stiverne’s 200m (23.33) and 400m (52.43) season-best times factoring in to their total team score.
The Canes also have some of the best marks in the women’s pole vault and women’s high jump from this season that are contributing to their team score. Alysha Newman’s school record vault of 4.50m ranks second in the NCAA and fourth in the world this season, while Dakota Dailey-Harris’ school record and ACC-leading high jump of 1.84m ranks fourth in the NCAA.
Miami also has Wimbley’s 400m and 200m times from a year ago that rank first and second, respectively, in the data used for the rankings. The Canes also have 100m hurdles times from Morrison and Jamika Glades and Glades’ top 400m hurdles time from a year ago, The Hurricanes’ top 4x400m relay time of 3:30.22 from last season rounds out the track events adding to Miami’s score.
The Hurricanes also carried two marks over from the 2015 season in the throws. Tiffany Okieme and Precious Ogunleye wrap up the scoring for Miami. Okieme’s mark of 15.90m in the shot put and Ogunleye’s mark of 61.17m in the hammer throw complete the 13 marks contributing to Miami’s team score.
Miami will host its final home meet of the 2016 outdoor season, the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, this Friday and Saturday. The meet will be aired on ESPN3. In addition to the track and field action held at Cobb Stadium on April 8-9, the Hurricane Alumni Invitational will serve as Senior Day for the Canes. Miami will honor its seniors on Saturday, April 9, in recognition of their contributions to the program.
