@CanesRowing Battles UCF on Senior Day
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing program battled against in-state foe UCF in an exciting dual regatta on the Indian Creek.
The Hurricanes and Knights competed head-to-head in a series of races on Miami’s home course. Saturday’s event also served as Senior Day for the Canes. Miami honored seniors Sarah Aschebrock, Caitlin Lowe, Hannah Nielsen, Joletta Silva, Caitlin White-Parsons, Alison Whitty and Gigi Williamson following the conclusion of competition.
“It was a tough day of racing on the Indian Creek,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “All our UM athletes really worked hard, but unfortunately didn’t come up with the results they wanted. The varsity 8 race was the closest of the day. It was a real battle the entire length of the course with no more than four seats separating the two boats the entire last 750 meters. We came up three-tenths of a second short, which is tough. But their time showed they have continued to improve their speed. The team goes into exams now and we will look to keep picking up speed for ACCs.”
Miami’s Varsity 8+ was the first boat in action on Saturday morning, racing at 7:45 a.m. against the visiting Knights’ top boat. Lowe sat in the stroke seat for the Canes, while fellow seniors Whitty, Aschebrock, White-Parsons and Nielsen helped the 1V8+ complete the 2000m course in 6:29.6, just behind the UCF varsity 8’s time of 6:29.3.
The Hurricanes’ 2V8+ finished second to UCF with a time of 7:03.66, while Williamson and the V4+ turned in a time of 7:54.96 to finish behind the Knights in the 1V4+ race. Silva and Miami’s 2V4+ placed third in the 2V4+ race, finishing behind UCF ‘A’ and UCF ‘B’ with a time of 8:05.7.
Following Saturday’s racing against UCF, the Hurricanes will train for the final regatta of the 2016 season, the ACC Championships. The 2016 ACC Rowing Championships will be held on May 13-14 in Clemson, S.C.
