#ProCanes Report - 10/24/16
The Monday #ProCanes Report will weed through all the NFL highlights and news to bring you the information you care about the most… what the former University of Miami football standouts did during the week prior. When San Diego selected Denzel Perryman with the 48th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the organization might not have predicted how quickly their second-round linebacker would be making an impact in the middle of the Chargers defense. Twenty games into his professional career, Perryman continues to prove himself again and again – never more than in Sunday’s 33-30 overtime win over Atlanta. Read on for more from around the NFL.
TOP PERFORMERS
Denzel Perryman (San Diego Chargers) – seven tackles, one interception
Facing a fourth-and-1 situation and nearing midfield, the host Atlanta Falcons decided to take a risk and go for it in overtime Sunday. Denzel Perryman quickly made them regret that decision. The second-year linebacker, who totaled seven tackles on the day, knifed through the line of scrimmage and took down running back Devonta Freeman short of the first-down mark, helping lead San Diego to a come-from-behind victory. Perryman, who set up the game-tying field goal with the first professional interception of his career in the fourth quarter, has 32 tackles for San Diego and has started five of six games.
Erik Swoope (Indianapolis Colts) – two catches, 51 yards
Erik Swoope’s journey from Miami Hurricanes hoopster to NFL tight end has been well-documented, and the 24-year-old continues to make strides in his second professional season. A week after hauling in two catches for 42 yards against Houston, Swoope saw increased time and added 51 yards receiving in a 34-26 win over Tennessee Sunday. Included in that performance was a 34-yard reception, as Swoope finished among the league’s tight end yardage leaders in Week 7.
Frank Gore (Indianapolis Colts) – 61 rushing yards, 22 receiving yards, one touchdown
The ageless Frank Gore put together another impressive performance in Sunday’s 34-26 win over divisional for Tennessee. Gore totaled 83 all-purpose yards, including 61 yards on the ground to mark his fifth straight game of at least 60 rushing yards. Gore added the lone touchdown by #ProCanes on Sunday, hauling in a 3-yard catch from quarterback Andrew Luck on a thread-the-needle pass to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter.
Allen Hurns (Jacksonville Jaguars) – four catches, 45 yards
Allen Hurns has been the model of consistency for Jacksonville in his three seasons with the organization, and that trend continued Sunday with a four-catch, 45-yard performance in a disappointing 33-16 loss to Oakland. Hurns, who went undrafted after setting the single-season yardage record at Miami as a senior in 2013, has 24 receptions for 345 yards through the team’s first six games. Though he has hauled in just one touchdown, Hurns leads the Jaguars in receiving yards despite ranking third in total receptions.
