Ten Hurricanes Named to the ACSMA All-ACC Teams
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami football team had 10 student-athletes selected to the 2016 All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACSMA) football team on Monday.
WR Ahmmon Richards (second team), DB Corn Elder (second team), P Justin Vogel (second team), WR Stacy Coley (third team), OL Danny Isidora (third team), RB Mark Walton (third team), K Michael Badgley (honorable mention), TE David Njoku (honorable mention), S Rayshawn Jenkins (honorable mention) and LB Shaquille Quarterman (honorable mention) were each selected to this year’s team.
The 10 student-athletes on this year’s team mark the third time in the last four years Miami has placed 10-or-more student-athletes on the ASCMA all-conference team.
Richards earned second team recognition after he established himself as one of the nation’s top freshmen wide receivers. The Wellington, Fla., native led all NCAA freshmen during the regular season with 866 yards receiving. In addition, Richards’ 866 yards receiving were a team-best and set the Hurricanes’ single-season freshman record.
Elder closed the regular season as the team’s fourth-leading tackler with 69 stops (49 solo) en route to earning second team honors. The Nashville, Tenn., native started every game during the 2016 campaign and was responsible for a team-best 12 pass breakups.
Vogel lived up to his preseason all-league recognition, as he was named to the ACSMA all-conference team for the second time in his career. Vogel finished the regular season with a punting average of 44.2, which ranked second in the ACC. He also dropped 23 punts inside the 20-yard line and had 16 punts travel over 50 yards.
Coley earned the third ACSMA honor of his career after he led the Hurricanes with a single-season career high of 58 receptions. The Pompano Beach, Fla., native also finished with 703 yards and nine receiving touchdowns – both of which were single-season highs. His nine receiving touchdowns during the regular season ranked third in the ACC.
Isidora earned his first career ACSMA honor thanks to another strong season on the Hurricanes’ offensive line. The Weston, Fla., native started every regular season game for the third consecutive season. His 38 straight starts are the most on the squad. In addition, Isidora helped the Hurricanes rush for 157.7 yards per game.
Walton earned third team honors following a breakout season for the Hurricanes as he more than doubled his rushing total from his 2015 freshman campaign. Walton finished his super sophomore regular season with a team-best 1,065 yards (88.8 yards per game) – a figure that ranked fourth in the ACC. The Miami, Fla., native was a frequent visitor to the endzone, as he finished the year with 15 touchdowns (14 rushing, one receiving). His 14 rushing touchdowns ranked 20th in the NCAA.
Badgley earned ACSMA honors for the second straight season after he led the ACC in scoring through kicking. The junior kicker was 49-of-51 on extra points and was 20-of-25 on field goals, including a perfect 9-of-9 on field goals attempted from 40-49 yards out.
Njoku was named to the ACSMA all-conference team for the first time following a career-best year where he finished with career bests in receptions (38), yards (654) and touchdowns (7). The redshirt sophomore closed out the year on a high note as he hauled in receiving touchdowns in four of his final five games.
Jenkins received his first career ACSMA honor after he recorded 70 tackles and a team-best 52 solo tackles during the regular season. Jenkins also posted seven pass breakups and led the team in interceptions.
Quarterman closed his rookie season at The U with 79 tackles, which tied for the team lead. The Orange Park, Fla., native started in all 12 regular season games for the Hurricanes and helped anchor a defensive unit that ranked second in the ACC in scoring defense (18.9). He also added nine tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. His eight quarterback hurries were a team best.
The Hurricanes finished the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the ACC. Miami is awaiting a bowl selection.
