@CanesTrack Ready for Tiger Paw Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field team heads to the Tiger Paw Invitational this weekend for its final competition before the ACC Indoor Championships.
The Hurricanes are among a field of talented teams from the ACC and SEC set to compete this weekend at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex, including North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas A&M, NC State, Alabama, Auburn, Wake Forest, Notre Dame and the host Tigers.
Miami’s athletes open competition at 3 p.m., with the women’s weight throw and men’s pole vault, while the women’s 60m hurdles starts off the running events at 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s action opens at 11 a.m., with the women’s shot put and high jump and the men’s triple jump, while the women’s 600m run is set to kick off at noon to open the final day’s running events.
The Hurricane women enter the Tiger Paw Invitational ranked No. 15 in the USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings. Miami has been ranked in the top 15 in each of the four rankings released during the 2017 indoor season.
Shakima Wimbley, who is the ACC leader in the 200m, 300m, and 400m, is among several Hurricanes to watch this weekend at the Tiger Paw Invitational. The senior leads a talented group in the 400m this weekend that includes sophomore Brittny Ellis and senior Aiyanna Stiverne. All three Canes rank in the top three in the ACC and top 16 in the NCAA in the women’s 400m.
The Canes will also look for senior Ebony Morrison to continue her success in the 60m hurdles, where she currently leads the ACC after posting a time of 8.17 seconds at the Meyo Invitational last week. Freshmen Erika Voyzey (high jump) and Darlene Charles (long jump and triple jump) will look to continue climbing up the ACC and national rankings in their respective events, while throwers Zakiya Rashid, Sherry Lubin and Karyna Armstrong hope to build momentum in their final competition before the conference meet.
Miami’s men will look for continued success in the short sprints, after the trio of Isaiah Taylor, Brandon Taylor and Myles Valentine all reached the 60m final at the Meyo Invitational a week ago. Juniors Jaalen Jones (200m) and Henri Delauze (400m) are poised for a breakout performance in their respective events, while Tom Gassner will look to build off a personal-best run in the men’s 800m.
Carlos Mangum leads the Hurricane men in the field events. The senior has been a consistent performer in the weight throw, ranking third in the ACC and 12th in the NCAA with a season-best mark of 21.22m. Freshman Tristan Schultheis will look to build off his collegiate debut in the high jump at last weekend’s Meyo Invitational, while multi-athlete Andreas Christodoulou hopes to fine tune his skills in a competitive setting before entering the men’s heptathlon at the ACC Championships in two weeks.
Following this weekend’s trip to Clemson, the Hurricanes will return to South Bend, Ind., for the 2017 ACC Indoor Championships. Miami’s women will look to defend their 2016 ACC team championship, while the men hope to build off their best team score since joining the ACC in 2004-05.
