Two Canes Selected for NCAA Singles Championship

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the third consecutive year, two members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team have been chosen to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship.

Both junior Sinead Lohan and freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba were tabbed as at-large picks to the prestigious tournament, which will be held May 24-29 in Athens, Ga.

For Lohan, ranked No. 16 nationally, this is the third straight year she has made the field. The Waterford, Ireland, native reached the quarterfinals in 2015 and advanced to the semifinals in 2016. Her seven wins are the fourth-most by any Hurricane in the tournament.

Perez-Somarriba, ranked No. 34 by the ITA, is among 12 freshmen in the 64-player field, including one of three from the ACC. A native of Madrid, Perez-Somarriba is the third Miami freshmen in the last five years to earn a bid, following Lohan in 2015 and Stephanie Wagner in 2013.

The Hurricanes are one of 18 teams in the nation with multiple selections, including one of four from the ACC.

This is the 15th straight year Miami has had at least one player in the NCAA Singles Championship, a streak that goes back to head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews‘ second year at the helm. This is the 32nd time in the 36-year NCAA era Miami has had a participant, including the 18th occasion—nine have been under Yaroshuk-Tews—multiple Hurricanes have been selected.

Lohan is set to be the ninth three-time participant in the tournament in program history, while Perez-Somarriba will be the 27th Hurricane to compete. 

The NCAA Singles Championship bracket will be announced May 23, one day prior to the start of play at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Lohan, Perez-Somarriba and the Hurricanes will return to the court May 13 at 10 a.m., when they take on USF in the opening round of the NCAA Team Championship in Gainesville, Fla.
