Darquea Named ACC WoMen's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami junior Daniela Darquea headlined the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golf All-Academic Team as she was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year today by the league office.
Darquea becomes Miami’s first ACC Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year since the award was established in September 2007. The honor is bestowed annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
A three-time member of the All-ACC Women’s Golf Team, Darquea finished among the top 10 at both this year’s ACC Championship and NCAA Regional. The Quito, Ecuador native earned WGCA All-Region honors and was honorable mention All-America. Darquea tallied seven top-10 finishes for the season and was second on the Hurricanes with a 72.2 round average.
Darquea, who is pursuing an exercise physiology degree with a minor in sports medicine, has been named to the Miami Athletic Director’s Honor Roll six times and has earned “Book Buster” citation from the university six times as well. She has been named to the Dean’s List at the end of five semesters and has earned Provost Honor Roll status (3.75 GPA or higher) three times.
Also joining Darquea on the ACC All-Academic team were teammates Dewi Weber and Delfina Acosta.
Weber, who is majoring in motion picture films and advertising, was selected to the All-Academic team nod following an exceptional finish down the stretch of her freshman campaign, as she posted a top-three finish at the NCAA Regional (third) and the NCAA Championship (tied for second). The Netherlands native closed out the year by recording five top-10 finishes and posted a team-best scoring average of 70.6.
Acosta, who is studying art, earned the All-Academic team honor after she posted a scoring average of 75.39. The Argentina native competed in 33 rounds as a junior and saw action in every tournament during the 2015-16 campaign.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.
